Out of this Galaxy

We here at Annex are sure you have all become familiar with the sometimes-infamous galaxy print. It’s everywhere, seen mostly on women’s clothing but also on occasional men’s shirt, your MacBook wallpaper and now on carpets. Some dig it, others don’t. We like to think of it as a print that has grown on us, a print that lets our inner science geek shine without being too in your face.

Check out these galaxy rugs by Schonstaub, available in three different variations to suit your decorating needs. Although a bit pricey, we like to think of it as a smart investment.

May the galaxy be with you!

Artist of the week: Erik Johansson

Swedish but based in Berlin, Erik Johansson is a photographer/retouch artist who uses his wicked skills to manipulate his photographs. His talent with photography as well as digital manipulation is definitely showcased through his work, as seen down below.  He attempts to capture his ideas rather than just fleeting moments which is what conventional photography is all about. Pretty rad. These are just some of our favourites.

Outfit of the week

Chilling at a house party? Heading out for a night on the town? Staying at home with your 4 cats?  We have you sorted for any summer celebration. Here’s our favourite look we’ve put together for the week, including a piece from our new jewelry line ‘Ten Commandments’. Check it out….we are definitely and utterly in love.

Essentials – The Basic Tee

You can’t wear the same shirt twice. It’s a difficult task to carefully analyse and list every public outing you’ve had in a particular item of clothing. It might be your absolute favourite, but you really don’t want to be known as the “guy in the polka dot shirt”.

Yeah, you might turn heads and receive a few sly winks from the girl in the corner, but after the fifth time, the B.O stains have sunk right in, and heads won’t be turning, they’ll be running.

5 reasons why you should stick to the basics:

1. You can buy one in every colour without having to mortgage your car.

2. They’re appropriate for almost any occasion.

3. Unlike many fashion fads, the basic tees aren’t going anywhere soon.

4. You can wear your tee with anything. There’s no need to fear a clash with your shoes or sunglasses.

5. It’s Festival Season – no one likes a boy with sweaty underarms, they’re light & lovely

6. They’re 100% cotton , machine washable & crinkle free – Mum will love you

So be cool in Spring (no pun intended). Head in store, or kill some time on our online store and get your Annex basics – 2 for $99.

There’s a Fine Line

So, where are we supposed to draw the line when it comes to fashion?

The ‘androgynous’ look really has taken off in the last year (yeah, we dig it) and a well-groomed guy with a pressed shirt is something to admire these days.

But if we’re constantly ‘pushing the boundary’, what is the boundary? It’s ok for girls to steal our button ups and jeans, so is it ok for us to steal their heels and handbags? Who says we can’t? (Not that we want to…)

We were browsing through catwalk images from previous ‘fashion weeks’, we stumbled upon something, and well, we’re not entirely sure what to think.

Dudes in Dresses?

We’re a little stunned, we’re even a little afraid that our fashion beliefs have gone off on some terrible tangent. Is this ok?

It’s ok.. If you’re stranded on a desert island…

This one we don’t even know what emotion to use…

In case you were considering ‘pushing the boundaries’ – just remember that it is possible to go too far. If your sweater is more emotive than you’re face, you’re probably not going to have a good time. Please stay indoors.

Interview of Jeff Lack > Personal Stylist

“Fashion fades, style is eternal.”  Yves Saint Laurent

• His career…

I was actually styling before I could even start work. After many years working retail and wholesale fashion I decided to go out on my own in 2005. In order to maximise my skill set I created my own assessment tool, saving clients ‘time and money’ but ultimately helping people be their ‘best self’..  And I still have my very first client!

• His inspiration…

What people are wearing everyday on the streets, particularly around fashion weeks around the world. Beauty in nature also inspires me every day.

• His favorite designer…

Tom Ford, for elegant avant-garde wearable collections.

• His clothes today

Converse ‘jack purcell’, ‘super’ sunnies, ‘goorin’ flat cap, edun jeans, ‘witchery man’ mini check shirt, ‘all saints’ db unstuctured jacket, ‘jim and jane’ pocket square.

• His style…

Tough question as I embody many different styles that are dependent on weather and mood. Right now… modern – urban – creative – street.

• His opinion on Australian fashion…

I love Australian fashion, and happily support the industry. If only we made more of it on home soil.

• His plans for the near future…

More workshops, writing and presenting. Hoping to make it to NYFW… Styling, styling and more styling.

Fashion Week

• What did you think of this years Australian Fashion Week?

Brilliant debut from project runway winner ‘By Johnny’, strong commercial collection from Maticevski, lots of fun from ‘We are Handsome’, clean modern masculine streewear from ‘Song for the mute’, feminine elegance from Johanna Johnson and loads of bright clour and prints from ‘Gary Bigeni’. Overall a good performance by the designers, some really crazy ‘ott’ men in heels outside the shows, perfect weather, great street style and a tentative start by Mercedes Benz as new sponsor. Looking forward to next year!

Denim & Fashion

Denim has always had its place in fashion. In the 70s we saw it flaired and paired back with printed shirts, and the 90s saw layered denim on denim. Levi’s and Calvin Klein both helped pioneer denim as a necessity, but brands such as Chronicles of Never and Annex have revitalised it and put their own spin on the trans-seasonal staple. This season, we see denim re-emerging as a key fashion piece, with denim shirts being an absolute must have. It is really easy to wear- simply layer it. Throw it over a t-shirt with a pair of chinos, or for the more adventurous, wear it layered over jeans and under a denim jacket (we recommend using different shades of denim to do this). However you choose to wear it, just make sure you have a denim shirt in your wardrobe this season. Check out the range in store.
