Can’t be bothered leaving the area on a Friday night, well Beach Road Hotel may be worth considering. The Vaudeville Smash is performing their new single ‘Roller Disco’ along with a bunch of other songs from their new album. If you haven’t heard of them before, think alternative pop rock, mixed with catchy hooks and easy to listen to beats. Local group ‘Goldsmith’ is supporting them, so head on down and check them out – will be worth it.

Feel like getting out and about on Saturday night? How about starting off your evening by seeing Josh Pyke perform at the Seymour Centre in Sydney Uni. Pyke’s quirky, soulful and effortless sounds make him easy to listen to and well worth checking out. This could be your last chance to see him before he bunkers down and begins working on new material.

Care to be a little artier? Then perhaps you should head over to the NSW Art Gallery and check out the Archibald Prize before it closes on June 3rd. Considered to be Australia’s most prestigious prize, it awards artists for portraits of distinguished figures in either the arts, science, culture or politics. This year’s winner is a self-portrait by veteran artist Tim Storrier. For more details visit the galleries website.

For a spicy winter…
Marc Jacobs > Bang
It’s getting cold out, so why not spice up your scent? Bang by Marc Jacobs is the epitome of a modern gent’s fragrance – it is edgy, musky and best of all, spicy. As the name implies, it does have a bit of a hit to it. Now don’t think Old Spice, because this isn’t for your grandpa, but rather more of a modern masculine scent that evokes black, white and pink pepper, all with underlying woody tones. One thing is for sure; it is a strong smell that commands attention and sends the nostrils tingling. However, we will readily admit, this is a fragrance that you’ll either absolutely love, or positively hate – we just happen to love it!
And for those of you who prefer something a little bit citrusy, Marc Jacobs has just released his new version of the fragrance – aptly title Bang Bang. With base lines of sandalwood and musk bearing similarity to Bang, the top notes of this fragrance encapsulate citrus and fennel, remaining fresh and light. Definitely something here for all men.

I was actually styling before I could even start work. After many years working retail and wholesale fashion I decided to go out on my own in 2005. In order to maximise my skill set I created my own assessment tool, saving clients ‘time and money’ but ultimately helping people be their ‘best self’.. And I still have my very first client!

What people are wearing everyday on the streets, particularly around fashion weeks around the world. Beauty in nature also inspires me every day.

• What did you think of this years Australian Fashion Week?
Brilliant debut from project runway winner ‘By Johnny’, strong commercial collection from Maticevski, lots of fun from ‘We are Handsome’, clean modern masculine streewear from ‘Song for the mute’, feminine elegance from Johanna Johnson and loads of bright clour and prints from ‘Gary Bigeni’. Overall a good performance by the designers, some really crazy ‘ott’ men in heels outside the shows, perfect weather, great street style and a tentative start by Mercedes Benz as new sponsor. Looking forward to next year!

The Annex – Our Favourite Bars…
Awkward — Kings Cross
This new bar is anything but awkward- perhaps a little kitsch, even a little strange (in the most fabulous way), but definitely not awkward. Located diagonally across from the infamous Coca-Cola sign, the bar is a great mix of food, wine, cocktails and a well-chosen array of music.
The owner, Fuzz, definitely knows how to treat his guests, welcoming them with open arms and making them feel right at home. In terms of drinks, try a few of the signature cocktails created by manager Christopher Thomas. They are fun and enticing, and definitely a winner. As for food, the menu is designed to be shared, but you cannot go past the Nutella chips. To die for! Best time to go? Thursday nights for a live Jazz performance, or Sunday morning brunch. Bloody Mary anyone?
Baxter Inn — Clarence St
The words ‘absolutely no bookings, no guest list, no functions- everyone is welcome’ is like music to our ears. This place is unpretentious, cosy and inviting. Located in a basement on Clarence St, the venue is buzzing with personality. Created by the duo behind hotspot Shady Pines Salon, think old school charm, with raw brick walls and exposed timber ceilings. As for the alcohol, the drink of choice is whisky, and with nearly 360 to choose from, there is more then enough to keep you warm this winter. The bar staff are more than happy to help you make a decision, just give them some basic guidelines and they will come up with something amazing. It is the kind of place you just want to relax- drink in hand, listening to soft music and sharing a laugh with friends. Definitely an experience worth trying.
The Rum Diaries — Bondi
A quaint bar in Bondi with nothing but rum on their mind (well, not completely true, but rum is definitely the drink of choice here). There is food to match the rum, but is delicious in its own right. Portions may be a tad on the smaller side, but they are designed more to share in a tapas style environment. As for the bar itself, its rustic old school charm is endearing, and definitely inviting. The interior is grand, yet the exterior is unpretentious and can be lost amongst the chaos of Bondi, but once gone, you’ll sure be back there. If you love your rum, or a just keen to try somewhere a bit different, head on over to The Rum Diaries.

MBFWA trend review
The key trend to emerge out of fashion week, for both men and women, was that summer will not only be bright, with colours and prints dominating the runways, but that it will be sporty yet tailored. For this trend, think tapered trousers in lightweight fabrics such as jersey or cotton, worn with relaxed t-shirts and fitted blazers. The great thing about this outfit is that each piece works on its own, and can easily be a staple in every guy’s wardrobe. There is a difficulty in finding the right balance between functionality and fashion trends, so here is our advice- choose basic colours when it comes to key items such as trousers or jackets, and then get a little bit crazier with t-shirts or shorts. Neutral toning is great, and when those warmer months hit (though right now they seem forever away) add a splash of red or maroon hues, which will be big, or crisp whites to lighten the look. You can even get ahead of the trend and start adding these pieces to your wardrobe now. The Annex has a great range of winter items that will flow with ease into your summer wardrobe, but are also great staples for winter.

I started playing with the crew at after parties, it’s a bit crazy how fast everything has spawned off that.

One place comes to mind Burning Man, my first time was last year & words seriously can’t describe it, well one actually does, Next Level!
The energy and lengths that people go to create Black Rock City is so twisted.
• His music…
If I had to put it into a genre I would have to say House music although it is very diverse.
It’s more underground, very dark, deep, very big bass lines yet still very sexy & funky.
• His favorite artist…
I’d have to say 2, it would be Salvador Dali & Damian Lazarus… Masterminds.
• His clothes today
I’m wearing a surrealism back piece, full left sleeve, 3 quarter right sleeve, a new chest piece, a beard & black nail polish.
• His style…
Dark, Mysterious & edgy with a hint of avant-garde. My style is inspired by pirates and vampires… or anything underworld.
• His opinion on Australian fashion…
I think Australian fashion is very safe there are only a couple of Aussie designers which are more suited to my style. Although I think people are starting to take more risks with their outfits.
• His plans for the near future…
Producing great music, traveling & more traveling. I have started a small exclusive label, the first collection should be out later this year.
• Any expectations for this fashion week?
I don’t have any expectations for fashion week as I don’t follow trends.

We already mentioned that menswear lacks a presence at fashion week, however, for what it lacks in representation it makes up for in innovation and style. Several trends have emerged in terms of key items for Spring/Summer 2012-13. Tailored jackets, drop-crotch trousers and denim, all with a sporty undertone,
have cemented themselves as a staple for every guy’s wardrobe.
Designers such as Ksubi, after almost an hour-long delay, unleashed a barrage of denim on the audience. They sent models down the runway in layered denim, demonstrating how this key wardrobe item can be worn in a range of ways. Others, such as Song for the Mute put on a more understated show. Using ‘The Box’, they paraded their models as installations atop light-up cubes. They paired back simple shirts with sporty yet tailored blazers and drop-crotch trousers, all in a neutral colour palette. The collective menswear show saw emerging designers such as Zsadar, Mils and From Britten reinstate these trends. Mils sent tailored ensembles down the runway, like the bright red blazer and short combination pictured below, whilst From Britten opted for more of a tailored sports look,
throwing cropped sweaters over t-shirts and fitted pants.
Overall, MBFWA this year has registered to us that spring/summer will see a clear menswear aesthetic emerge. Neutral tones will be used to calm down some of the bright colours, while in terms of shapes, we will see tailored pieces that have a sporty and relaxed vibe. Denim will also, yet again, be the all-important staple
(in almost every form- shirt, pants and jackets) and will be a must for your wardrobe.

Annex Jewellery Collection
Men’s accessories are difficult to come by. Too often us guys are faced with settling for the basics – a watch, pair of sunnies and maybe a bag. And whilst that’s all well and good, sometimes a piece of jewellery is needed to complete your outfit. Sometimes, simple pieces like a ring, a cuff or a chain are all you need.
And that is where the Annex jewellery line comes in.
Annex has created one of a kind rings which are embedded with real Roman Coins that have been individually sourced from around the world. The coins themselves range from 2000-3000 years old and are set in solid sterling silver. Depending on your individual style, they come in a few different forms. Some are set in a claw whilst others are embedded into the band of the ring, and both come in ’blackened’ oxidised silver or a high polish,
which provides a nice contrast to the antiquity of the coins.
For those of you who aren’t really into rings (though when they are this cool, we don’t see how you can’t be!), we also have a few other pieces that might interest you. We have solid sterling silver cuffs which come in two different widths, a slim line one and a chunkier style. They are simple, cool and can compliment any look.
